Kamados today come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Because of this, it often happens that a model is slightly different in size from a comparable model and an accessory does not fit properly because of this. An example is that the Keij kamado large in our range has a diameter of 21 inches, while the Bastard large is just a bit larger at 22 inches. However, they are both Large models. In some cases, the measurements of a kamado are actually given in centimeters instead of inches, which can sometimes make it even more confusing. To make sure you buy the right accessories for your type of kamado, below are some measuring instructions.

Measurement instructions plate setters and Divide & Conquer

Surely the most important accessory for a kamado (besides the grill) is the plate setter or divide & conquer. With this accessory you ensure that the direct heat from the coals cannot reach your dish, turning your kamado into an oven, so to speak. A divide & conquer, unlike a plate setter, has half-moon stones and grates that allow you to work with a direct and indirect zone at the same time

1. Measure the inside diameter of your fire ring.

2. Measure the inside diameter of your kamado.

3. Next, it is important to see what type of fire ring you have. In the image above, you can see that it consists of a round fire bowl with a fire ring on top. Where the above fire ring runs (pretty much) straight down, there are also fire rings that are tapered. An example of this is that of the Patton compact. For the 13 inch, 20/21 inch and 23/25″ versions no problem because they lie completely on the fire ring .Our plate setters of 14, 15, 18 inch, the Grill Guru plate setter large (21″) and our Divide & Conquers, however, have a stainless steel base that rests on the fire ring where it sinks slightly into the fire ring. Measurement instructions coal baskets

If you want to be sure a coal basket will fit your kamado, it is important to measure the dimensions of your fire bowl. The table below shows the minimum diameter your fire bowl should be at the bottom. In addition, the height of the coal basket is listed. At that height, measure the width of your firebowl and see if it is at least the diameter of the “minimum diameter top” column. The Ash Tray Lifter can be used in conjunction with a coal basket. This is placed in the opening at the bottom of your fire bowl. Then you can place a coal basket on top of this.

Measurement instructions cast iron grates

To find the right size cast iron grill for your kamado, just measure the diameter of your current stainless steel grill. Sometimes a cast iron grill may not fit quite right on a Divide & Conquer base due to upward-projecting pins. This can be solved in many cases by bending the pins slightly. In addition, a cast iron grill is also perfect to use without a base where you simply place it directly on the fire ring. Since this way you grill a little closer to the coals, this is often even preferred.

Measuring instructions pizza stones

You generally use a pizza stone in conjunction with a plate setter or Divide & Conquer. Place the pizza stone on the stainless steel grate and make sure it is just smaller than the diameter of your fire ring. This allows the air to circulate well and you get the best results. Our pizza stones are available from 26cm to 42cm diameter, so there is something for almost every kamado!

Measurement Instructions Rotisseries

We have several Rotisseries in our assortment at Kamado Essentials. Some varieties are made specifically for a particular size kamado. This is about the Rotisserie for a 15-inch kamado and 21-inch kamado. Here it is important to measure the inside and outside diameter of your kamado itself.

We also carry the versatile Grill Guru rotisserie that fits multiple sizes of kamados. This rotisserie can be placed on kamados with an inner diameter of 45 to 58 cm. As a result, this rotisserie fits Medium, Large and XL kamados.
